UrbanSpoon LOVES Malawi's Pizza Project
Looking for a new place to eat? Somewhere that has a great tasting menu that won't empty your wallet? Look no further! I have found it. If you're into seriously yummy pizza and pasta check out Malawi's Pizza at the Riverwoods in Orem, Utah.
Check out what fans are saying about Malawi's Pizza
This post below was taken from Julie's Thoughts
and it is called, Malawi Pizza
Which...
African Pizza?
a weird combo,
I know.
But, here's the deal.
The food?
not African.
instead,
Healthy, fresh, italian-ish
pizza, pasta, and salads
really tasty.
The Malawi tie?
They give a portion of each meal to feed a child in Malawi
oh...
plus the decor
has a distinctly "African" flair
It's well done.
(Minus the rhino masks that were placed over the fire strobes
but, that's just the professional designer in me being snarky.
It was obviously done by a residential designer-
not someone who understands codes.)
(On a revisit today, we noted the rhino masks had been removed -
ha! busted by the fire marshall!)
Anyway, the one design kudos I will totally give them?
awesome sink in the restroom!
I love when a restaurant has nice restrooms.
(It's very telling about the overall cleanliness of the place)

Great Review on Yelp.com
Malawi's was a pleasant surprise. My husband and I love pizza, and love to try new kinds whenever possible (after all, Dominos, Papa Johns, and Pizza Hut get old). We saw the sign when we were driving by the Riverwoods one day, and decided to give it a go.
Malawi's Pizza has taken over the space that Magleby's used to occupy. It is a very large space, that can accommodate a lot of people. I don't ever see this place being completely full (not because it isn't good, but because it is huge). The decor is awesome. The owners clearly put a lot of thought (and money) into revamping the space to give it a very modern serengeti feel. They have a small art piece made from blown glass (which is one of my very favorite kinds of art).
The ordering/paying process at Malawi's Pizza is set up similar to Noodles and Company or Pei Wei. There are huge menus at the front with a cashier. You order your food, they give you a number, you choose a table, put your number on the table, and they bring your food out to you. One of my favorite parts about this type of restaurant is that you don't have to linger around the counter waiting for you number to be called, but you also don't have to tip! Tipping isn't that big of a deal, but it always makes your trip to the restaurant 15-20 percent more expensive. Anytime I can save money...I'm all for it.
The restaurant also has an open kitchen concept. Every step of the preparation can be watched. You can also see all the really fresh ingredients they use. I like restaurants like that because you know exactly what you are getting. The restaurant also really prides themselves on using fresh/healthy ingredients. Their menu states, "We are working hard to get you a HEALTHIER pizza. Wheat bread, vegetables, lowest fat cheeses and meats, roasted chicken, fresh tomatoes... We go easy on the toppings for the same reason but frankly, it makes a better tasting pizza, especially if you cook it in a spectacular wood burning stove."
The menu is quite extensive. They have pizza, pasta, salads, and dessert pizzas. For each of those, they have signature items and create your own items. My husband and I both ordered pizza (after all it is called Malawi's Pizza). My husband ordered the Santa Fe signature pizza and I ordered the Primo Pepperoni traditional pizza. Both pizzas had a thin, crispy crust...which is common with wood burning ovens, and are about 10".
The Santa Fe had a ton of toppings--lime salsa, southwestern chicken, black beans, green chile's, onions, tri-colored bell peppers, chipotle aioli, avocado, and tomato--(they lie when they say they go easy on the toppings), and was on a honey wheat crust. Everything on the pizza tasted really fresh and good.
The Primo Pepperoni was more basic with just pepperoni on a white crust. The tomato sauce on the pizza was VERY fresh, and there was plenty of pepperoni. The one thing I will say is that the cheese was a little weird. It wasn't bad at all, but it also wasn't my favorite (maybe because it is low fat).
Malawi's serves Coca-Cola products, which is what I like. I won't drink any Pepsi products. Next time I go, I would like to try the pasta--some of their signature pastas sounded really good, such as the Chicken Pepper (trotelli, alfredo, chicken, parmesan, and basil). Also, if you are into sweets, their dessert pizzas looked excellent. Just know that they are just as big. If I was on a date, I would order one pizza and one dessert pizza and that would be plenty of food (my husband and I did not finish our two pizzas...it was a lot of food).
Finally, Malawi's Pizza is a company that gives back to the world. They claim that, "For every meal we sell, we will donate a nutritious meal to orphans in Malawi, Africa." Obviously, this is where they get the name. I really like companies that do things like this, and I try to support them whenever possible.
Overall, I will definitely be returning to Malawi's Pizza. The pizza was good, the atmosphere was fun, and we helped someone in need.
Change for Animals: Malawi's Pizza Project- Restaurant Review
Though the decor might suggest grazing in the African Savannah, the food boasts a healthy Italian flare and open kitchen, so you know just how your food is being prepared. The pizzas are listed as individual or personal sized, but at 10", could easily be split between 2 people. I ordered the veggie pizza with no cheese, which came loaded sky high with a delicious garlic-y red sauce, zucchini, squash, onions, mushrooms, and peppers. I also added artichokes for a mere .50. Though the thin, crispy dough might have left a little to be desired in the flavor area, I had no complaints due to the pile of toppings that covered it.
For under $10, you can order one of their specialty pizzas or create your own by choosing a sauce, dough and toppings. They have a variety of options from the ordinary choices to things a little more on the obscure side like toasted pine nuts and asparagus. They also offer a variety of healthy and delicious salad or pasta options (as well as desserts) for both the vegan, veg, or meat eating crowd. My dining buddies ordered a chicken pesto pasta that, they raved, was one of the best they had tried.
Meals range from about $7-$15 and the concept behind this new pizza joint is pretty awesome as well- they donate healthy meals to African orphans in Malawi. The restaurant does not have a website, so details of the menu or how the donation process/percent etc. are not available at this time unfortunately, nor can I add mouthwatering photos to convince you to try Malawi's, but I definitely recommend trying it yourself.
Malawi's Pizza Project is located in The Shops at Riverwoods in the old Magleby's building- right behind Macaroni Grill. Here is the address and phone number- 4801 N University Ave, Provo, UT 801-225-2800."
I'm Lovin this "Purposeful Pizza"
"Malawi's is the new tenant in the building that formerly housed Magleby's at the Riverwoods Shopping Center in Provo" What a refreshing change! Aren't we all exhausted with the same old dining out options? I know I am! It feels good to go somewhere to eat great food and give back to someone else all on your lunch hour :)
The food was great, but more impressive than that is the customer service! Malawi's is honestly and absolutely the best restaurant I've been to in a long time. The employees were clean cut and attentive. They were knowledgeable about the restaurant background and history and were professional with the information they shared. I'll definitely eat here again.
We ordered the Pesto Pizza, the BBQ Chicken Pizza, and their Berries & Cream Dessert Pizza--ALL of them were delicious.
"Malawi's provided an excellent overall experience, and the menu won't bust your budget, either. The pizzas range in price from $8 to $10.50 (dessert pizzas are cheaper), while the salads and pastas are all between $7.50 and $9.25. And it is nice to know that, in however small a way, the hunger being satisfied isn't just your own. We'll be going back for more."
